Absolute magic – 91 year old man becomes first time grandfather, sets record

Charles Smith did not expect to make history the day he met his first grandchild, but that is exactly what happened.

At 91 years and 209 days old, Smith officially became the world’s oldest first time grandfather, according to Guinness World Records. The milestone came in August when his granddaughter Isla was born.

For Smith, the moment itself mattered more than the record.

“All I can say is I picked her up and didn’t want to give her back. Except for the nappy changes,” he said, recalling the first time he held her. He described the experience simply as “absolute magic.”

The recognition came as a surprise. His son Ashley and daughter in law Hanna quietly submitted an application on his behalf after Isla’s arrival, later presenting him with the official certificate.

Now, he is embracing his new role with pride, even settling on a name that feels just right.

“There are lots of grandpas and grandads around,” he said. “I feel Poppy suits me.”

Beyond the record, it is the small, everyday moments that mean the most to him. Watching Isla smile and laugh has become a constant reminder of how much he values his family.
